What does a car cost?

01.02.21

The cost picture of the car is often very confusing and unpredictable. With a car subscription, however, it is very easy!

Several of the customers we have spoken to have over time become accustomed to walking with a lump in their stomach; to be constantly nervous about what is going to happen to the car as time goes on. Car is a significant expense in the everyday economy, and can quickly become even bigger if something unforeseen should happen. With a car subscription from imove, you do not have to worry about this.

In May, the Road Traffic Information Council published "Costs of car maintenance - examples of calculation" for 2020, where they present an overview of the annual costs for different types of cars in five different price levels. The report gives an overview of how many costs accumulate when you own a car: everything from fuel (whether it is diesel, petrol or electricity), service costs, tolls, oil, tire change and tire hotel, to annual fee, insurance, EU approvals, and of course interest and down payment on the car loan.

The key points also demonstrate that the annual costs of owning a car, and not least petrol and diesel costs, have generally increased in recent years, and often unforeseen costs of damage or other problems that require service and repairs will also appear.

While it costs 600-1000 kroner to fill a petrol tank, it costs 20-40 kroner to charge an electric car.

The calculations show that if you buy a new car of between 200,000 and 1 million, you will be somewhere between 3,000 and 14,000 in fixed monthly costs, not including unforeseen costs that may (or should we say will) appear.

At the same time, the biggest cost is also the most "hidden", namely the loss of value of the car: For every day you drive, your car becomes less and less valuable. Basically, you can say that as you drive out on the street from the car dealer, your car has dropped 10-15% in value, just because it is now used.

You do not see this loss of value - and thus the total cost of your car - until you sell the car again. When the insurance companies can also point out that private cars are statistically parked 96% of the time; how much does the car lose in value while just standing still in the parking lot?

The largest part of the car costs is the loss of value. With each passing day, the car becomes less valuable. However, the accounts are difficult to summarize before the car is sold.

At imove, you can choose between various small cars and larger family cars that cost you around 5,000 to 8,000 kroner, at a fixed monthly price; where everything except tolls and the power you use is included. The monthly price is not so different from owning, the big difference lies in predictability and flexibility: because when you buy, you are committed to that car - and to the fixed expenses - until you sell the car again. Because even if you no longer use the car, the loss of value continues to fall while you look for the right buyer.

‍We are concerned with removing the stressful moments of having a car, and with us you do not have to worry about the inevitable loss of value, or unforeseen things; we will fix it.

‍We ease that obligation: We believe that most people are beginning to see that it does not make sense to tie hundreds of thousands kroner in owning an item you may not use as much, or which you suddenly no longer need. So with us you drive a modern and popular electric car in top quality, and only pay for the time you actually use the car - and only as long as you need it. That way you can evaluate month by month; you can start, upgrade and unsubscribe whenever you want, at no cost to you.

‍In addition, you can also pause your subscription. If, for example, you are going on holiday and do not need the car for a couple of weeks, we can sublet the car to traditional rental companies, or to car sharing services, which often experience increased demand during such periods. In this way, income is generated on the car while you are away, and instead of you being left with a disproportionately high parking bill from airport parking, you can save a few kroner on having borrowed your car. These are measures that both keep monthly rental prices down, and that limit the number of cars around the city and on the roads. That is good news for both the wallet and for the environment.
